The city of Akko has an exceptional history and rich cultural heritage, spanning over 4,000 years. The Old Town, located on a natural peninsula that protects a natural harbor at the northern end of Haifa bay, is surrounded by historical ramparts from the Crusader and Ottoman times, within which one can find a mix of archaeological and monumental treasures from ancient to modern times.

Once in Akko, one could also take some time to explore the attractions in the area. Nazareth, where the birth of Jesus was announced and where Jesus grew up, is located only 40 km away. The Lake of Galilee with Capernaum and the Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus taught his disciples and performed miracles is another 25 km away. The vibrant industrial city of Haifa, home of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and the site of the MED’99 conference, lies 25 km south of Akko, and Tel Aviv – the entertainment hub of Israel that never sleeps – is another 90 km to the south. Jerusalem – the capital of Israel – situated 170 km from Akko, is suitable for a day trip. Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem are easily reached by direct train from Akko, getting there in half an hour, 1.5 hour, and 2 hours, respectively.
